MAPES (Master of Arts Program in European Studies at Boğaziçi University) provides students from diverse backgrounds with a solid academic foundation in the fields of International Relations and Turkish Foreign Policy, as well as European Integration and EU-Turkey Relations.
The program aims to equip the students with an international vision to understand and analyze the challenges and complexities in global and European affairs. It provides a solid training both in International Relations and European Studies and allows the students to go beyond established dogmas and develop their anaytical and critical skills.
Core seminars are designed to enhance students’ theoretical understanding and empirical knowledge about the
- changes in contemporary global politics and economy
- political and economic aspects of European integration and its enlargement
- transformation of Turkey’s role in the international system and vis-a-vis the EU
Elective courses provide the opportunity to focus on particularly salient issues such as:
- the future of nation-states and nationalism;
- the changing role of international law and organizations;
- the impact of globalization on foreign policy and new security concerns;
- problems of immigration, refugees, and social integration;
- the emergence of Islamic movements as a global force;
- questions of gender equality in Muslim countries and European societies with Muslim minorities;
- changes in the orientations and instruments of Turkish foreign policy;
- current issues in the deepening and enlargement dimensions of European integration;
- historical and contemporary trajectories of European-Turkish relations;
- culture and identity aspects of European integration and EU-Turkey relations.
The program prepares students for a broad range of career options. Our graduates seek professional careers in international organizations, European institutions, Turkish and foreign diplomatic services and other governmental bodies, multinational corporations, and NGOs.
Those who are fascinated by concepts, theories or empirical research decide to continue with an academic career in the field of international relations or European politics.
MAPES is an interdisciplinary and non-thesis one-year program, supported by the Department of Political Science and International Relations, the Department of Economics and the Atatürk Institute of Modern Turkish Studies.
Students who have successfully completed the requirements of the Program are awarded an M.A. (Master of Arts) degree in European Studies.
